Eye problems
HBO can be used before and after surgery to prevent complications and
speed up healing.
Clinical application for HBO:
- Vascular Insufficiency (Arterial Occlusion –CRA) HBO
allows preservation of inner retinal function and restoration of vessel
patency
- Hypoxic Disorders of the Anterior Segment
(diabetic retinopathy, ischemic central vein ooclusion, and carotid
artery disease). Chronic hypoxia causes iris vessels to dilatate and
cause necrosis. Therefore application of the HBO prevents this one to
occur by vasoconstriction
- Neovascularization of the Retina (in
diabetic retinopathy).Hypoxia- induced vasodilatation and edema is a
essential feature in this process and HBO therapy helps reduce edema
and improve hemodynamics.
- Retinitis Pigmentosa and
Macular Degeneration .After the HBO therapy visual acuity improved and
retinal receptors are saved from deterioration..
- Radiation –induced optic neuropathy
- Toxic
Amblyopia (Ocular Quinine Toxicity) –toxicity involves a partial or
total and often and often permanent loss of vision.HBO treatment in
conjuction with activated charcoal helps prevent loss of vision by
increasing oxygen delivery to the retina..
- Corneal
disorders (keratitis, keratoconus, traumatic injuries and ulceration)
HBO has been shown to be effective in reducing corneal edema,
neovascularization preventing scar formation caused by
surgery..
- Glaucoma (elevated intraocular pressure ) HBO reduces edema
and improve circulation.
- Infections
involving the eye and the orbit (trauma, immunocompromised patients,
diabetics and after the surgery such as cataract extraction and
intraocular lens implantation). HBO has direct effect on bacteria
(bactericidal and bacteriostatic) and at same time helping white blood
cells in phagocytosis. HBO also enhances the effect of some antibiotics
Despite of vasoconstrictive effect of oxygen, HBO is
used in treatment of those conditions because the eye, especially the
retina contains defense agents (antioxidants0 such as ascorbic acid,
vita mine E and gluthatione that prevent cataract formation caused by
oxidizing free radicals.
We are advising our clients to take 400mg. of vit. E and Mg
10mg daily
during HBO therapy to preventing possibility of cataract formation
(rarely seen in patients who received less than 200 HBO).
